The Blog

This site began as an assignment for a course I took during my second year at the University of Guelph in Winter of ’08. The original blog, hosted on Blogger, was an outlet for reflection on assigned readings, class discussions, and other relevant material. When that course was over I moved all my content to this location. Currently, this blog contains my research notes about topics that interest me, mostly pertaining to media. Hopefully it can serve as a node for discussion as well. To what end this compilation of ideas will take me is uncertain, but it’s my hope that they’ll provide a rich basis on which to develop a thesis, or some kind of independent publication – whichever comes first!

The Author

My name is David Beatty, and I’m an undergraduate student at the University of Guelph in the city of Guelph, Ontario, Canada. My Major is English, which I study to optimize my core skills in communication, but my major interest is the study of media, in particular new media. I’m interested in technologies that are revolutionizing communication and entertainment, as well as theories and praxis of information dissemination, and how all these things shape the hegemonic ideas in culture. My goal, as of now, is to do work that involves innovative ideas related to the design and efficient use of communication/organization/entertainment tools.

Like any good connoisseur of culture, I’m an afficionado of all modern media – from films, to music, to video games, to web and software design. Thus, I’m also interested in the nuances of these art forms, and love learning what I can about them.

On a personal note, I also enjoy the finer things in life, which does go beyond a bunch of pretentious language and lofty ideas. I love acting and other types of performance, and I am borderline-neurotic about going for walks or drives just for the chance to become absorbed in some music. I appreciate good cooking, but I could probably survive on PB&J sandwiches alone.
